Indication: Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. For patients with type 2 diabetes who do not have clinically evident coronary heart disease but possess at least one other risk factor for coronary heart disease—such as hypertension, retinopathy, albuminuria, or smoking—atorvastatin is indicated for reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and for lowering the incidence of cardiovascular events in high-risk groups. For patients with hypertension who do not have clinically evident coronary heart disease but possess at least three other risk factors for coronary heart disease—such as type 2 diabetes, age ≥55 years, microalbuminuria or proteinuria, smoking, or a first-degree relative who experienced a coronary heart disease event before age 55 (men) or 60 (women)—atorvastatin is indicated for reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina.
